DI Water vs. Softened Water for Washing an RV
Softening takes out hardness. Deionization takes out the dissolved solids that can still dry into spots. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
What softened water changes
An ion-exchange softener replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium or potassium ions. This reduces hardness, not total dissolved solids. It is valuable for plumbing, appliances, showers, and the first stage of a complete water-treatment system.
What DI water changes
Deionization removes charged dissolved solids from the rinse. With fewer minerals left behind, the final water can dry on paint and glass without leaving the same visible residue.
Why DI is not a replacement for every stage
DI resin is best used for the final rinse, not as a substitute for basic filtration and softening in every application. Sediment can foul equipment, and the total dissolved ion load consumes DI capacity. A softener does not remove that load. The right pretreatment depends on the water and the equipment.
The practical RV setup
For a large coach, softening and filtration make the water better to live with while a DI stage handles the spot-free wash. A combined installed system keeps those treatments available in the bay.
