Choosing an RV Water Softener for Your Motorhome

Start with your water hardness and how much water you use. Then compare the space, service routine and installed cost of the options that fit your coach.

Test the water before choosing capacity

A softener targets dissolved calcium and magnesium. Use a hardness test on the campground supply and record the result in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. Clear-looking water can still be hard. A TDS meter cannot substitute for that test.

Compare grains with grains, not a fixed gallon promise

Grain capacity describes the amount of hardness a softener can remove before regeneration. Divide usable grain capacity by the source hardness in gpg for an approximate treated-water volume. A hypothetical 16,000-grain softener treating 10-gpg water would have an estimated capacity of 1,600 gallons; at 20 gpg, the estimate would be 800 gallons. These are examples, not H2O Simplified specifications.

Actual usable capacity depends on the equipment and regeneration settings. Leave a service margin and check outlet hardness rather than waiting for deposits to appear. Ask what salt dose and flow conditions support any advertised rating.

Flow rate and physical fit are separate checks

A larger grain number does not tell you how well the system supplies a shower while another fixture is running. Check rated service flow and pressure limits. Measure the bay with room for connections and access to the controls. A tank that fits through the door may still be awkward to service.

Portable or installed

A portable tank is often a good entry point for occasional travel or moving between rigs. A permanent installation reduces the equipment you unload each time you park. It also occupies bay space and requires a fit review. Both approaches need maintenance.

Ask about regeneration before you buy

Find out which salt the system requires, how it is added and how the rinse is handled. Request the service procedure for the exact configuration. Harder inlet water and heavier use shorten the interval between regenerations; installation in the bay does not remove that requirement.

Account for filtration and exterior washing

Basic sediment and carbon filters have different jobs from a softener. Softened water still carries dissolved salts, so it can leave spots after drying. If you want a final rinse that can air-dry, consider a DI stage and include its resin service in the budget.
